Playground Zones Are Suppose to Be A Safe Zone for All Our Kids

Members of the Saanich Police Traffic Safety Unit made the time to drive a strong safety message home to commuters in one of the many play ground zones in Saanich.

On Friday, February 5, between 8:00 am and 10:30 am, several TSU officers conducted a speed enforcement campaign in the 5000 block of Cordova Bay Rd. There the officers set up in the play ground zone with speed detection devices.

During the 21/2 hour period more than 50 motorists were stopped and police officers issued 50 violation tickets for speeding. Motorists were travelling well above the posted speed limit – speeds varied from 46 km/hr to 69 km/hr.

The motor vehicle act is very clear (section 147(2)) when it states: A person driving on a highway must drive their vehicle at a rate of speed not exceeding 30 km/hr when approaching or passing, between dawn and dusk, a public playground for children where signs are displayed stating a speed limit of 30 km/hr, or on which the numerals “30” are prominently shown.

The Saanich Police are reminding motorists that the difference between 30 km/hr and 50 km/hr could make all the difference to a child when they are hit by a car – you could kill a child who is just playing.
