How the thief got inside remains a mystery as the home was not damaged during the break and enter and it is believed that the home was fully secured. A bump key may have been used.
If you have any information on this break and enter, please call Saanich Police at 250-475-4321 or Greater Victoria Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
Bump keys are readily available keys designed to work on all locks of the same type. They can be purchased on-line for a couple of bucks each and thieves can learn how to use them by watching helpful videos on various website. Bump keys are not illegal as they are legitimately used by locksmiths. However, if someone has them for the purpose of breaking in, then they are illegal.
There are several lock designs that are not vulnerable to attack from a bump key, including electronic locks, magnets locks and locks using rotating disks.
