The cause of death for a 43 year old Saanich woman found floating face down in Kings Pond earlier this morning, January 8th, is still undetermined.

Saanich Police, with the assistance of the Coroner’s Office, have been actively investigating her death throughout the day.  The initial call came in at around 8am, from a passerby who found personal belongings, including ID and money, lying beside the pond that is located next to a walking path at Ascot and Queensbury.  Saanich officers attended and found a body floating a few metres from shore.

The body was recovered by the Saanich Police Dive Team at around noon and learned to be a woman appearing to be in her 40’s.  She has since been identified and confirmed to be the owner of the property found beside the pond.

At around midday, police located the woman’s car, a ‘99 Pontiac Grand Am, parked at the top of Mt Doug Park.  The car has been towed by police to a secure compound, where it will be examined by officers.

The woman’s next of kin have been contacted.  They are receiving support from investigators and Victim Services.

A coroner’s autopsy will be scheduled for early next week to help identify the woman’s cause of death.

Evidence to this point suggests that foul play was not involved however the investigation will remain active until the results of the autopsy are known.

Anyone with information that can help investigators, are asked to call the Saanich Police at 250-475-4321.
