A 21 year old Prince George man is recovering in a Victoria hospital from head injuries after being assaulted in the parking lot of the Red Lion early Sunday morning. Derek Douglas Miller, a 27 year old Westshore man is appearing in court today to face charges relating to the assault.
At around 1am on Sunday, January 10th, Saanich Police attended the Red Lion parking lot after getting a call of an assault. Officers arrived and found a man lying on the ground while another man fled on foot. With the assistance of a K9 unit, the fleeing man was caught and arrested. He is Derek Miller.
The man on the ground was provided medical assistance from paramedics and fire personnel before being taken to hospital. Initial assessment was that his injuries were not severe however later in the day, hospital staff informed police that the man was suffering from head trauma.
After speaking with witnesses and reviewing surveillance video, it appears that the two men were in the lower parking lot of the Red Lion when Miller allegedly punched the 21 year old, causing him to fall to the ground. While on the ground, the 21 year old man was then kicked in the head area.
Police have recommended charges of Aggravated Assault and Breach of Probation for Miller who is scheduled to appear in court today, January 11th.
