Auto Crime Enforcement Month

spacer

February is Auto Crime Enforcement Month in British Columbia.

IMPACT

The Bait Car program, launched in 2003, has had a significant impact on auto crimes.  This impact translates into a 52% decrease in Theft from Vehicles and a 55% decrease in Theft of Vehicles across BC.  With community involvement and appropriate crime prevention practices, we should continue to see auto crimes decrease.

TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOU CAR

  1. Install an immobilizer.
  2. If you don't have an immobilizer, use a steering lock every time you park your car.

  3. Always close your windows and lock your doors.
  4. Take your possessions with you and don't leave anything in your car.
  5. Keep your spare keys in your wallet, not in your car.
  6. Park in well-lit areas near pedestrian traffic.  Avoid parking behind hedges and fences.
  7. At home, use a motion sensor light for your driveway.
  8. After opening an automatic gate to underground parking, watch out for thieves waiting to slip inside.  Wait for the gate to close behind you.
  9. Engrave your stereo and other on-board valuables with your driver's licence number.  Record serial numbers and keep them in a safe place at home.
  10. When fueling your car, ensure that you have your keys with you and lock your car when you go inside to pay.
