February is Auto Crime Enforcement Month in British Columbia.

The Bait Car program, launched in 2003, has had a significant impact on auto crimes. This impact translates into a 52% decrease in Theft from Vehicles and a 55% decrease in Theft of Vehicles across BC. With community involvement and appropriate crime prevention practices, we should continue to see auto crimes decrease.
TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOU CAR
- Install an immobilizer.
- If you don't have an immobilizer, use a steering lock every time you park your car.
- Always close your windows and lock your doors.
- Take your possessions with you and don't leave anything in your car.
- Keep your spare keys in your wallet, not in your car.
- Park in well-lit areas near pedestrian traffic. Avoid parking behind hedges and fences.
- At home, use a motion sensor light for your driveway.
- After opening an automatic gate to underground parking, watch out for thieves waiting to slip inside. Wait for the gate to close behind you.
- Engrave your stereo and other on-board valuables with your driver's licence number. Record serial numbers and keep them in a safe place at home.
- When fueling your car, ensure that you have your keys with you and lock your car when you go inside to pay.
