Fireworks Bylaw – For Everyone’s Safety

spacer

In 2007, Saanich amended a bylaw further restricting the presence and use of fireworks in our community.  Historically fireworks and firecrackers have been a tell tale sign that Halloween was upon us.   They can provide a visually stunning display to help celebrate an occasion but they have also proven themselves to be dangerous when not handled properly.

In response to the injuries and damage sustained by fireworks and firecrackers in Saanich, the amended bylaw is now in effect which directs the following:

  • The sale of fireworks is prohibited within the Municipality;
  • The sale, distribution or discharge of firecrackers is prohibited;
  • People under 18 years of age are prohibited from discharging or possessing fireworks;
  • The discharge of fireworks is permitted only between 5pm and 10pm on October 31st;
  • Permits to discharge fireworks must be obtained before 12 noon on October 30th.

Fireworks permits are obtained through the Saanich Fire Department and are issued after the applicant attends a safety lecture.  Presently 65 permits have been issued with the expectation that upwards of 100 will have been handed out by the deadline on October 30th.   To contact Saanich Fire, call 250-475-6111 or attend their headquarters located at 760 Vernon Ave (same building as Saanich Police).

If you see anyone handling fireworks or firecrackers in an unsafe manner, leave the area immediately.  Do not touch any unexploded fireworks that you find.  And call police if you feel a situation is unsafe.
