Saanich Police want everyone to have a safe and fun Halloween. It is a night full of excitement, chills, thrills and treats. To help ensure this, please take a moment to review these tips.
COSTUMES
- Wear clothing that can easily be seen at night. Retro-reflective materials at the front and back of your costume are best. Consider glow sticks around your neck or wrists.
- Make sure your costume is not too long, to prevent tripping.
- Wear makeup rather than masks. If you do need a mask to make your costume perfect, ensure that it does not interfere with your vision or breathing.
- Dress appropriately for the weather.
TRICK OR TREATING
- Walk in groups - staying together.
- Stick to well lit, well known areas. Don’t wander into unknown neighbourhoods. Do not take short cuts through parking lots, alleys or parks.
- Let your parents know where you are going and when you will be home.
- Do not trick or treat at houses that have their lights out.
- Use the sidewalk. Do not cut across lawns or gardens.
- Cross only at corners. Never dart between parked cars or in the middle of the block.
- Only accept treats at the front door, never go inside a house.
- It is also a good idea to take a cell phone with you in case of an emergency.
- Do not go near animals you do not know.
- Organizing a Halloween party is a great option to help keep your kids safe.
TREATS
- Have a good meal before going out. It will give you energy and help prevent you from dipping into your treat bag before it is checked by an adult.
- Do not eat homemade treats or fruit if you do not know who made them and where they came from.
- Throw away any treats that are not in sealed packaging.
FIREWORKS AND FIRECRACKERS
- Stay away from firecrackers and fireworks, or anyone playing with them. Not only are they illegal to have, but they are Very Dangerous!
DRIVERS
- Please slow down and watch for kids that might dart out in front of you.
- Pay extra attention to crosswalks and intersections.
Our School Liaison Officers are currently out talking to school children throughout our community, educating them on Halloween Safety. By reiterating these safety messages in your home, we are confident everyone can have a goolishly safe Halloween....
