PERSONAL SAFETY
- Create a safety plan.
- Listen to and act on your intuition. It’s better to be safe and risk a little embarrassment, than stay in an uncomfortable situation that may be unsafe.
- Keep your head up, know your surroundings and know where to go for help if you need it.
- Plan your route to avoid isolated areas.
- Change It Up. Regularly change your walking/running/cycling/driving routine.
- Avoid distractions like cell phones, head phones and personal music players.
- Carry a cell phone with you and have it readily at hand. Even one that has no minutes left can be used to call 911.
- Have your keys ready when approaching your car or building.
- Do not label keys with your name or any identification.
- Don't overburden yourself with heavy parcels or a bulky purse. Keep your hands free as much as possible. Use a backpack or a bag with a shoulder strap to carry your items.
- Make Eye Contact. It will help to disarm those that are a potential threat to you by giving you a sense of authority and the ability to identify them later.
- If you need help, go to the closest business, trusted neighbour or police station. Call out for help. Yelling something like “Call 911” is a good bet.
Being cautious and aware at all times is your best defense.
