Volunteer Task Description

Job Title:
BLOCK WATCH AREA COORDINATOR - specified geographic area

Function:
In cooperation with the Saanich Police Department, AREA COORDINATORS will be responsible for the delivery of the Block Watch program in their designated area, and to motivate community members to become involved.

Duties:
The Block Watch Area Coordinator carries out the general duties associated with the Block Watch Program in their area, including:

  • Acting as liaison and communication link between Block Captains, the Block Watch Office, Saanich Police, and other community members in their area.
  • Assisting Saanich Police by coordinating information "fan outs".
  • Ensure that Block Watch participation is not used as a vehicle for promotion for any other cause. Personal information, lists and data are to be treated with confidentiality. Dissemination of information is exclusive to the purposes of the Block Watch program and will not be shared for any other purpose.
  • Attending meetings with other Area Coordinators and Saanich Police Department representatives to discuss the objectives of the Block Watch program. Held Jan, Mar, May, Sep and Nov.
  • Identify people who would be interested in becoming Block Captains, and Co-captains, and assist, with the support of the Block Watch Office, in the set up of the Block Watch program for their neighbourhood.
  • Meet with and provide orientation to new Captains and Co-Captains, and whenever possible attend neighbourhood block meetings.
  • Maintaining contact with, and providing support to Block Captains - contact made at least once every quarter.
  • Distribution of newsletters to Block Captains.

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications:
Interested in and committed to preventing crime in your area.
Good communication and organizational skills
Ability to work with other community volunteers.
Criminal Record Check required (no fee).
Respect of confidentiality essential.
Sense of humour helpful
