Tour de Rock 2008

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer is a partnership between the Canadian Cancer Society and 22 municipal police officers, RCMP (including Auxiliaries and Reserves) and military police. Between September 20 and October 4, 2008, riders will cycle almost 1000kms from Port Alice to Victoria in the 11th annual Tour de Rock. In the past ten years, over $10 million has been raised, with $1.8 million in 2007 alone! Riders will have spent 6 months, 8,000 hours and cycled 3000km while training for the 15-day tour.

Riders raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research and programs that support kids with cancer, such as Camp Goodtimes. With your donations and support this can be made possible – you can be a contribution to extraordinary children and touch their lives.

This is the 11th year of the Tour de Rock, with the backing of more than 60 BC communities and thousands of volunteers. Tour de rock was started in 1998 by Cst. Martin Pepper of the Saanich Police, whose vision was to see members of the law enforcement community raise money to help sick children.

This year two members are proudly representing the Saanich Police on the
2008 Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team: Cst. Erin Wagg and Cst. Doug Hanbury.

Cst. Erin Wagg

Erin has been a member of the Saanich Police Department for 2 ½ years and has always been inspired by the Tour de Rock. She was motivated to join the Tour de Rock for many reasons, including camaraderie of the team, working and fund-raising with communities, pushing her fitness to new levels, meeting amazing people along the journey and most importantly, the opportunity meet the kids and make a difference in their lives! AND experience the awesome impact they will have on her life!

As a child Erin was fortunate to be healthy and active…as a member of the Tour de Rock she hopes to provide the same opportunities to kids with cancer by sending them to Camp Goodtimes and through childhood cancer research. With your donations and support this can be made possible!

I was born in Victoria but grew up in Duncan, and have lived in Victoria since attending the University of Victoria and completing my BCom. After working in the financial sector for six years, I became a Police Officer with the Saanich Police Department in 2005 and love it!

Many interests include spending time with family and friends, riding my motorcycle, health and fitness, bellyfit, photography, dancing, traveling, food, reading, camping and getting up to amazing things, including the Tour de Rock!

I have been on a bicycle and playing sports since I was a kid – I love being active – which has continued to my adult years. I have competed in amazing sporting events, including the Dragon Boat World Championships in Cape Town, South Africa and Fastball World Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

I have been a member of the Saanich Police Department for 1 year and have been aware of the Tour since it began in 1997.

Born and raised in Victoria, I have witnessed family, friends and co-workers battle this deadly disease, some were fortunate and other were sadly not. I have always wanted to help after seeing first hand how strong my family and friends were while battling cancer.

When I realized how successful the Tour de Rock is I could not pass up the opportunity to participate. This year, with the help and support from the various communities on Vancouver Island, we are hoping to put more smiles on the faces of young people battling cancer.
